A cataract operation can be life changing. After an operation lasting just a few minutes, someone who thought they would never see again can regain their sight and their independence.
Before surgery to remove her cataract, Dahiben Ishwar from Gujarat in India had been struggling to work as a farm worker and housewife. Things were very hard as there was no one to help her. Her sight restoring operation has given her joy and optimism for the future.

Cenneh Ado from Nyademyama in Sierra Leone has been blind for three years with cataract in both eyes.
Her grandson heard on the radio about an eye screening camp and asked her to go along. She didn’t know that her sight could be restored, but the nurse explained the procedure and dispelled any fears she had about the surgery.
Cenneh was delighted that the surgery would cost her nothing. The surgery, transport and meals are provided free for patients identified at the screening.
When Cenneh’s bandage was removed she was very happy and her face lit up with a big smile. She asked if she could have the other eye done tomorrow. The ophthalmologist agreed.
