Two artificial eyes

An artificial eye can be a wonderful gift. Helping someone to regain their confidence and lead a more independent life.

Your gift could provide two artificial eyes which will help someone like seven-year-old Dinithi Wishwani, from Sri Lanka.

At two and a half months old, Dinithi was diagnosed with cataract and nystagmus (a condition that causes involuntary eye movement) in both eyes.

Unfortunately, Dinithi's right eye had to be removed, but she was able to have an artificial eye, thanks to a Sightsavers' partner.

Dinithi is now happy to be back in school.

Eight-year-old Ayesha, from Pakistan, developed an abnormal white reflection in her left eye. On examination it was found that Ayesha had an unexplained mass in her eye, and after a CT scan, the mass was diagnosed as cancerous.

It was decided that the best treatment would be to remove Ayesha's eye. An artificial eye was placed in the socket and a conformer, which helps keep the shape of the eyelid, was put in place.

Ayesha's new eye will give her the confidence to lead a much more normal life.
